Touching Lives - Art Deco Style

While addressing the English Architectural Association in 1924, Winston Churchill said ‘’There is no doubt whatsoever about the influence of architecture and structure upon human character and action. We make our buildings and afterwards they make us. They regulate the course of our lives.” Simply put, architecture impacts human behaviour. How it affects its occupants is a science in itself- Vastu Shastra or the science of architecture, the roots of which run deep within India. Thus, the architectural style applied to the construction of any building largely affects human behaviour and actions.

Of the different architectural styles, one that embodies modernization is the Art Deco style of architecture. Art Deco began as a movement during World War I in France and was embraced as a refreshing change by Americans during the 1920s-40s.

Art Deco is a style of architectural design in which rectangular forms are geometrically arranged. It is characterized by vibrant colours, ornamentation and bold geometric shapes. It involves spires, use of stucco, glass, etc. Art Deco began as a reaction to modernism but was declared as an ‘’assertively modern’’ style of architecture.

Art Deco is not new to India. In fact, many famous buildings in Mumbai and Chennai have been designed the Art Deco way. Speaking of recent times, the renowned architect Hafeez Contractor has drawn inspiration from this style for his project named Ashok Astoria, a premium residential community that offers apartments and row houses for sale in Nashik.

The Art Deco style with its symmetry, geometric shapes and construction materials lends a charming elegance and flamboyance to its buildings. The vibrancy that it represents is poised to enthuse people with a creative and futuristic approach to life!
